There’s a New ‘It’ Bag in Town That’s Made for Everyone

We would have died — from boredom.” That was what long-time fashion critic, Cathy Horn, wrote about Dario Vitale’s decision to deviate from the indelible iconography associated with Versace in his debut collection. Dramatic? Maybe. But, if I’m honest, fashion has felt, well, boring as of late, or at the very least, reductive as many designers have rushed to reheat old nachos by recreating the same old design formulas from their respective houses. Vitale offered us “a petite mort”: a sort of sartorial aphrodisiac meant to reawaken the senses through a dramatic death and rebirth of the old design codes. The recontextualizing of Versace’s mythology through a modern lens, was most apparent in the collection’s accessories, specifically, the introduction of what will undoubtedly be the season’s hottest handbag: the Pivot.

Lost amongst the subterfuge of online discourse surrounding the Spring Summer 2026 runway show, the bag slyly made its debut a few mere steps away from Vitale’s own bedsheets — talk about selling sex! Within the halls of Milan’s Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, models of both genders sauntered about the space wearing looks reminiscent of Gianni Versace’s ’80s era with the sculptural bucket bag discreetly tucked in the nook of their arms, draped over their shoulders, or clinging from their hands. While much of the initial online discourse about the collection centered on the sinuous silhouettes, subtle prints, and subdued styling, the Pivot bag did not get the attention it deserved… until now.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve begun to see paparazzi shots surface of models and singers in the street donning bucket bags adorned with the brand’s distinctive Medusa hardware; thereby marking the official start of the bag’s ascension to cult status among the style crowd. Don’t be fooled, though; Versace’s Pivot bag is poised to become popular outside the fashion world, too. I’d go so far as to argue that this handbag is reflective of a wider phenomenon in pop culture, in which [insert name of your celebrity crush here] is using style to subvert cultural norms through embracing gender-fluid accessories. Our generation’s sexiest men? You won’t spot them outside without their designer handbag in tow.

Call me thirsty if you want, but there’s something to be said about the sex appeal of a man carrying a bag (celebrity or not)! With good-ole misogyny rearing its ugly head in every facet of modern culture, man-purses offer a sort of refuge from the red-pill ecosystem — a sort of promise that you could one day have a partner that’s so self-assured in their sexuality that they’ll wear a matching Pivot bag with you. Of course, gender-fluid handbags have been around for a hot minute, but within the context of contemporary culture and Versace’s historic design codes, it does, in fact, feel groundbreaking.

The notion of releasing a unisex handbag that can be worn by anyone at this point in time anchors the brand’s accessories between the past and the future: paying homage to the Versace family’s penchant for pushing boundaries through unfettered maximalism while simultaneously offering a new generation a pragmatic way to embrace luxury in their everyday lives. The latter is what sets up the Pivot for its soft launch into mass popularity, as Vitale’s austere approach to maximalist tenets is reflected in every aspect of the handbag, including its provocative shape. The bucket shape is made seemingly spicier with a slouchier silhouette and a removable strap that lends itself to being worn multiple ways. It comes in two sizes, both spacious enough to carry all your everyday essentials: lip gloss, wallet, keys, phone, and The Cut’s most recent issue. The bag’s functionality alone makes it a big selling point, but all the additional bits and bobs make it a bag that the “It” boys (and “It” girls) will be all about.

One of the most luxe elements of all? The material. It’s crafted from supple vegetable-tanned leather and luxurious suede, and it is intended to develop a natural patina over time while remaining soft to the touch — something we want all our lovers, we mean handbags, to be, amrite? It’s also adorned with a chain detail that subtly accentuates the silhouette and is anchored by a cameo leather patch featuring a 3D-scanned rendition of the original symbol that adorns the gates of the brand’s first atelier in Milan.
Basically, every detail of this bag manages to do what every other newly appointed creative director has been aiming for with their accessories: create something that can infiltrate the culture. It’s only a matter of time before Vitale’s Pivot bag will be spotted on my man’s arm (who’s not my man because he’s a celebrity I’ve never met). Until then, I’ll be waiting with bated breath.
